Prayer To the Sky is in Mystic USA

Quilt National 21 continues it's tour of the USA.  The original exhibition has been divided into three groups and Judy Martin's Prayer To the Sky is in the "B" group.

The exhibition opened at the Mystic Museum of Art in Mystic, Connecticut on March 18 and will continue on display until April 17, 2022.  

Quilt National asked each artist to send in a video clip about their process, and Judy made several small videos.  By clicking on this link,  the inner world  , you can see what Judy said in April 2021, about her intent and how looking at the sky can help us to access this huge space inside of us.

You tube video of opening artist talk: Penny Berens, Judy Martin In the Middle of the World

Judy Martin and Penny Berens speak about how their work is inspired by their rural environments in this You tube video produced by the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum.  The talk was produced during a live zoom event on September 29 2021 before the exhibition opened.  

The exhibition, 'In the Middle of the World' showed at the museum October 2 - December 18, 2021.  

Miranda Bouchard, guest curator, worked with Penny and Judy while they prepared work for the show and provides an introduction in the video.  While she is speaking, you can see the installation happening with a time-lapse recording.  Judy speaks next for 15 minutes and shows images of her inspiring view across Manitowaning Bay and then Penny speaks about her deep observing of nature.  At the end of the video there is a lengthy question and answer period extending the whole thing to nearly one and a half hours.  Thank you to Ryan Milton at the MVTM for helping to produce this video.

A second artist talk with Miranda, Penny and Judy happened as a closing celebration on December 18, 2021.  It was recorded, and hopefully the video will be available soon.  

The inner world and Quilt National 21

Prayer To The Sky is included in the biennial exhibition Quilt National 21, Athens Ohio.

The exhibition opens in May and because of the pandemic, the opening reception is changing, most of the events will be online.

The director of Quilt National has asked the exhibiting artists to prepare videos of themselves speaking about the work that will be in the biennial exhibition this summer.  In her video, Judy speaks openly about her poetic vision and how her work in textiles might give us the feeling when we look at it as to how we feel when we are alone in nature.  She also speaks about the techniques she used to create Prayer To The Sky.  View that section here.   

The talk: My Awakened Heart / My Pandemic Summer

 Judy Martin was the guest speaker for York Heritage Quilt Guild in Toronto, October 20, 2020.

The meeting was held over Zoom, and the lecture was pre-recorded.  

It has now become available online and can be viewed by clicking HERE. 

It's 45 minutes long, and throughout Judy speaks about how making is healing.  She shows the projects that she worked on between March and September of 2020.  Near the end of the recording, she shows some of her more recent finished pieces.  

Soft Summer Gone at Riffe Gallery in Ohio, the Quilt National 17 tour

Soft Summer Gone, plant dyed silk quilt, hand quilted with embroidery stitches, 100 inches by 100 inches, winner of two awards for surface design at Quilt National 2017.

Jane Forrest Redfern (director of the Dairy Barn art gallery in Athens Ohio, host of Quilt National) spoke about the quilts in the exhibition at the opening on January 25, 2018.  Soft Summer Gone appears at approximately the 32 minute mark of this 45 minute video.    Jane said that it reminded her of a chenille quilt from her childhood.  She remarked that it was hand stitched in a hoop.

Quilt National 17 is on exhibit at The Ohio Art Council's Riffe Gallery until April 14, 2018.
