Evolve exhibition at the Propeller Gallery in Toronto opens in September

Judith E Martin is one of six artists exhibiting in Toronto this fall.

between heaven and earth  12 x 12 inches

Judy made three new hand stitched pieces with circular motifs for this group exhibition.

in my arms humble   21 x 11 x 5 inches

Each circle began at its outer edge with the most basic of stitches, the running stitch.  This simple stitch was continued round and round inside the circle, with each stitch carefully placed to line up with the one in the previous row.  The size of the stitches gradually decreased as the centre was approached.  The concentrated repetition of working in this way put the artist into a kind of trance.  It's hard to explain, but Judy felt cared for by the slow work, as if she were hugging herself.

turning forever to the heart  12 x 12 inches

Stitching as a way of mark making is time consuming and sensuous.  The maker's hands touch the cloth repeatedly and create a surface that others yearn to touch.  The use of touch and the amount of meditative time contained in hand stitched art has a mystic and healing power.

These pieces were inspired by traditional Indian kantha (chatai circles), the Japanese Nui Project and the whirling devotional dance of the poet and Sufi priest, Rumi.

The show runs from September 14 - October 2 and then continues online for another couple of weeks.   The opening of the exhibition is on September 17 from 2 - 5 pm.

David Kaye Projects

David Kaye Projects has listed In The Middle of the World as an Event .

Although the David Kaye Gallery closed December 2018, the newly formed David Kaye Projects is a developing platform that David Kaye will use to continue promoting the many artists he has represented.  Judy Martin's 2017 exhibition is well documented here.  The photographer is Frank Myers.

David Kaye says:

I am pleased to be able to continue working with this great group of artists, that grew over the years, by allowing this website to be available. I feel it is important as an archival online document that showcases the amazing efforts of all those with whom I worked and exhibited. The newly formed DAVID KAYE PROJECTS will be a developing platform that allows me to resume promoting these extraordinary talents.

My Awakened Heart (My Pandemic Summer) lecture for York Heritage Quilt Guild in Toronto

Judy Martin was invited by guild member, Irena Hopper, to speak to the York Heritage Quilters Guild at their October meeting in Toronto.  Because of COVID, all meetings are online and Judy created a pre-recorded presentation with the assistance of Deb Larsen, a member of the guild.    The lecture goes live tonight October 20 at 7 pm, and will be available for members of the guild and for guests.  Facebook link here

Judy's lecture is not the typical trunk show about her life's work and the story behind it, but rather an exploration of how her quilting and stitching practice helped her emotionally during the strangest spring and summer of  our lives, the 2020 pandemic.  She will show where she lives and explain how she works.  There will also be a gallery of new work, not shown in public yet.

Hard Twist 10: Memory at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto

Hard Twist 10:  Memory
August 27-December 27 2015
Gladstone Hotel

opening reception will be September 10, 2015  7 pm
Judy Martin will be exhibiting Red Moons in this exhibit about memory.
The jurors (Melanie Egan, Sarah Quinton, Elizabeth Eliott) chose this piece made from the borders of a 90 year old wool blanket because of the beautiful wear-marks in the cloth that came from use.  Human sleep is when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, not only to cold but also to the unknown dream world.

This cloth holds evidence of years of human touch and protection.
It holds memory.
Judy and her husband will be in attendance at the opening in Toronto, September 10, 2015.
Hope to see you there!!!

Hard Twist is curated by Chris Mitchell and Helena Frei.
